.Well thanks to good old Santa I am continuing to be a Sony Slut, I got a PS3 (the 60GB version) for Christmas :-D

So far I love it, my intentions are to install openSUSE on it, but I'm slightly nervous about doing that even though the wiki makes it sound relatively straight forward. To those that have done this, could you report on the hardware compatibility and any tricks you needed to do to get openSUSE working flawlessly? My main concern is wireless not being supported, this would is crucial for me to install as my PS3 is two floors down and at the opposite side of the house from any wired network point.

In the mean time I have installed the Tango theme that Bastien Nocera created, which works very nicely, thanks. So at the minute I can fool myself that I'm running openSUSE on there (there's nothing wrong with a bit of dillusional thinking every so often ;-) ). My next step is to set up a media server to enable streaming to not just my PS3 (the main one though) but to all devices in the house, these include 6 laptops (all bar one running openSUSE), one desktop, one PSP and one N800 running OS2007. To get the PS3 to see the Media Server the latter needs to support DLNA, from what I can see MediaTomb and uShare both support these and are easily installable - either from Packman or from the Build Service. I was unable to get MediaTomb to be seen by my PS3, but uShare worked pretty much straight off. My only quibble with uShare is that it doesn't dynamically update with the available media, if I add a new file I need to restart the service and then re-scan for media servers on the PS3. I am going to try TwonkyMedia as that seems to be a pretty popular one for embedding into devices, one of which I would love to get. Again if you kind folk of the interweb could provide feedback, it would be greatly appreciated :-)

I do have another issue once I have the "right" media server in place, the actual media to be played is very hit and miss :-( Audio is fine as most of my stuff is in .mp3 (I know I should have it in OGG but as my N800 is the only portable device I have that supports OGG [with a bit of help and hampering my battery life] I'm happy to stick with the format) and there are no issues. The painful part is Video. I am running the latest firmware on the PS3 (2.10) which provides DiVX support, problem appears to be how the DiVX avi is created. All the media for my PSP works fine as that is in .mp4 and any .mpeg, but some of my .avi come up as "unknow data type" or similar. I can query the file and get the filename under info but nothing else :-( Could someone point me in the right direction as to how to fix my video woes, please?

Oh and if anyone wants to have a game of Resistance Fall of Man or Rainbow Six - Vegas over the WAN, or if you just want to hurl abuse at me you can find me on PSN using the same Nick as on IRC. If you aren't sure what that is look at my Build Service Repo for a hint ;-)
