I was asked via twitter by Kalle Persson if I fancied packaging Scribes to become his hero for the week. Well there was a cry for help if I ever heard one - granted no damsel in distress or anything dramatic like that, but I still thought it warranted the donning of the Super Hero Cape and ridiculous mask that hides nothing other than one's sense of dignity; the wearing of women's underwear is perfectly fine and normal, but wearing a stupid mask that makes you look like a cartoon robber is just silly.

So of i went to my trusty terminal and got my trusty Vaio talking with the splendiferous openSUSE Build Service. As a result I can happily say my powers are getting stronger (not on the same scale as others but stronger than they were, remember things are relative ;-) ) I can now say gp and scribe with:

It is currently in my home repository but will most likely move soon, either to GNOME:Community or to the new Contrib repository pending review. Happy scribing :-)

For all of you that have laptops or even netbooks that have a Broadcom wireless chipset, the need to mess around with ndiswrapper are pretty much over. No, Braodcom haven't released the source for their drivers, but they have at long last provided a distributable blob. My main interest in this driver is for the Dell Mini series of netbook, but this driver also fits many other machines; anything with a BCM4311, BCM4312, BCM4321, and BCM4322 based hardware should work (also some that aren't mentioned here will work ;-) ). The great guys over at Packman are kind enough to provide the relevant kernel module in an easy to use -kmp package, just look for broadcom-wl. If you wish you can manually download the driver from here, it is built against the latest released kernel for 10.3, 11.0 and 11.1

Thanks go to Alberto Passalacqua for pointing me to the driver, Andrea Florio for packaging it, Pascal Bleser and Detlef Reichelt for enabling the updated kernels and general hocus pocus magic needed :-)

Yes the next instalment of the netbook saga is ready for consumption. This time it's the turn of the Dell Mini 9. Everything should work out of the box so to speak, yes that includes wireless.

As always head over here to get the images, next up for geekofying is the MSI Wind, after that it'll be the eeePC9xx. The only major device I'm missing is the Acer Aspire One, so if anyone has one of these devices please could you send me the details mentioned here.

A Public Service announcement for all the users of Gwibber that are running 11.1

I am very very sorry for screwing things up for you.

I had first forgotten to enable the openSUSE 11.1 build targets in the BuildService, and then after I had done that I had some build issues. I am at present rather pushed for time to be able to look at the problems and rectify them. I will however make it a priority on Monday. Once again I am so sorry for the monumentous cock up!

Finally after much procrastination, physical and verbal abuse towards myself, my laptops and the universe in general I am pleased to announce that Gwibber is available for openSUSE 11.1 :-D Not only that, but for those that like to really bleed with their openSUSE installs you can also get it for Factory.

I would like to apologise for this task taking pretty much two weeks; I've been fairly busy with work and with it being a fairly big holiday, that meant my children came first (it isn't often that the geeko takes second place ;-) ). Most importantly I'd like to thank mw, WolfiR, vuntz, Beineri and msuman for helping me fix things. Why so many people helping me? Well for starters, I have never professed to be a packaging guru; secondly they all helped with different aspects of things.

So without further ado go and be social and gwibber away on the latest and greatest the geeko has to offer :-)
